Courtney La Bau

Courtney has over 16 years experience in the international political and business arena.  Courtney has served as a consultant, speaker, lecturer, and published author on a variety of topics, including foreign policy, ISIS, counterterrorism, and women in politics.  Although a native of Los Angeles, she has lived and worked all over the world and is deeply knowledgeable in foreign affairs, cultures, and international relations.  She speaks fluent Spanish and conversational Arabic.

Courtney currently serves as a Senior Advisor on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Community Partnerships.  In this capacity, she is responsible for all counterterrorism and countering violent extremism efforts in Southern California, working directly with local and federal agencies as well as the Mayor’s office on strategic efforts and programs.  She serves as a direct link to DHS headquarters for the region, and works with religious and other community partners on building civil society, community resilience, and countering extremist narratives.  

Prior to her time at DHS, Courtney consulted on projects with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Counterterrorism unit, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, and various think tanks around the world. Courtney has also authored numerous publications and reports and has frequented numerous media and radio outlets as a subject matter expert.

Courtney is also the Vice Chair of Emerge California, an organization dedicated to recruiting and training Democratic women to run for political office. She is an appointed delegate to the California Democratic Party for a two-year term, and a former Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign Alumni, having served in several roles within the campaign.  Courtney is also a Political Partner for the Truman National Security Project in Washington DC, and the Political Director for the Los Angeles chapter.  She was recently named one of Los Angeles’s “40 under 40” leading civic leaders by the Empowerment Congress.

Courtney previously worked and lived between Cairo, Egypt and Los Angeles as a Senior Investment Consultant for various companies in the region, analyzing opportunities within the finance, real estate and entertainment industries across the Middle East and Southeast Asia.  She was in Tahrir Square during the uprising and experienced the Egyptian revolution and the regional political shift first hand.

Prior to her work overseas, Courtney was a Global Investor for JPMorgan Securities in Los Angeles, responsible for advising on and the execution of client trades and strategies across all sectors of the stock market.  She started her career as an Analyst for JPMorgan’s Private Bank in New York and then Los Angeles prior to moving to the trading desk.

Courtney is also on call with various election monitoring agencies, having served all over the Middle East in this capacity.  

Courtney graduated from the University of Southern California in 2001 with a B.S. in Business Administration.
