Janet Miller

Class of 2017

Janet Miller is an educational innovator and Central Valley community activist, who brings fresh perspectives in secondary and post-secondary education. Her work has centered on building college and career transition programs and growing access to them.

She holds a BA in English Language Arts from Hunter College, the City University of New York, an MA in Organizational Development from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and an MA in Special Education from San Francisco State University. She is dedicated to building bridges for those whose paths to college and careers have been rocky and not adequately supported by their communities for lack of privilege and opportunity. She seeks to strengthen their access and help level the playing field.

Her Fresno City and County community involvements include election to the Fresno County Democratic Central Committee, a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, participation in the CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) Program, organizing and campaign building for local and national campaigns, and the Martin Luther King City of Fresno Unity Planning Committee.

As Director of the Academic Success Center at Menlo College in Atherton, CA, Janet founded a summer bridge college program for incoming at risk students, which won the national award for Most Innovative Program of the Year from CHADD (Children and Adults with Hyperactivity & Attention Deficit Disorders). Janet was founding Program Director of the Berkeley Center of the College Internship Program, building this new center to bridge the path to career and academic success for fragile learners. She was a Summer Fellow in 2015 on the opening team for Hillary’s Nevada state offices, then team leader for her Fresno Campaign Office and finally Regional Staging Director for the Central Valley until the end of that campaign.
Her dedication to helping students navigate college and career training is also personal, as the mother of 2 adult children and now 2 grandsons, educated in California. She has been a union member, a hotel manager, a political campaign organizer, and a candidate. Herself a lifelong learner, she seeks to grow educational opportunities for all, no matter where they start their lives. She understands we all need help getting a leg up and she will work for all to open opportunities to learn. We hope you will get involved in her campaign.
