Maimuna Syed, Executive Director

Maimuna Syed has worked for statewide and national unions for eight years. Most recently, as Northern California Field Director at California Labor Federation, she directed the political, organizing, and legislative priorities of the organization, its unions, 17 central labor councils, and 1.2 million union members in Northern California. Among her achievements, Maimuna created and managed a ground-breaking training program for union members to promote engagement and leadership development, which has become a model across the labor community. Previously, Maimuna worked as New Mexico State Affiliate Political Organizer for the American Federation of Teachers and as Pennsylvania Political and Legislative Coordinator for AFSCME.

Prior to coming to Emerge CA, Maimuna worked for the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton. As Pennsylvania Training Director, she developed and implemented training programs for organizing, leadership development, mobilization and voter contact for over 3,000 staff and volunteers.

Maimuna will be the first Muslim-American to serve as Executive Director in Emerge America’s network of 17 state affiliates.

Amritha Venkataraman, Operations and Communications Manager

Amritha Venkataraman joins Emerge California as the Operations and Communincation Manager. Amritha comes from working in campaign politics both locally and nationally. A native of Michigan and Kalamazoo College Alum, Amritha managed the first in the nation millage campaign to address homelessness in school aged children in 2015. Recently, she served as Deputy Training Director for the Hillary Clinton Pennsylvania Campaign and priority congressional campaigns.

Amritha is excited to be a part of Emerge California's mission to recruit, train and inspire the next generation of women elected officials.

Lindsay Bubar, Southern California Program Director

Lindsay Bubar is a Los Angeles-based political consultant who is best known for her work recruiting, training and advising women and progressive candidates as they run for office.

Lindsay has worked with a broad range of clients, including Sandra Fluke for State Senate, Wendy Greuel for Mayor, Congressmember Henry Waxman, Carolyn Ramsay for Los Angeles City Council and Alex Padilla for Secretary of State.

Working to ensure we have full gender equality in politics, Lindsay has been on the Board of the National Women’s Political Caucus, LA Westside for more than five years, helping to elect pro-choice women throughout Los Angeles County. Lindsay is also on the Advisory Board of Running Start, an organization dedicated to bringing young women into politics.

Lindsay serves as a Political Partner for the Truman National Security Project and previously served as a Board Member of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters. She is the former Political Director of the San Fernando Valley Young Democrats, was named one of California Forward’s Forward Thinkers, and previously worked for the California League of Conservation Voters and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Lindsay was raised in the San Fernando Valley and graduated from the University of Southern California with degrees in Psychology, Business and Advertising. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband, David Graham-Caso.

Vecky Elliott, Central Valley Program Director

Vecky is a political consultant, community organizer and a social and environmental justice activist in Tracy, CA. Her background is in political science, comparative politics, international relations and civic engagement. Ms. Elliot currently serves as the president of the Democratic Party of Greater Tracy. She is also a member of the San Joaquin County Democratic Central Committee, chairing the Political Action Committee and a delegate to the CA Democratic State Central Committee.

Vecky joins Emerge CA as the Central Valley Program Director on the heels of the program's 2018 expansion into the Central Valley.
