Emerge California Selects 49 Women

from NorCal, SoCal and Central Valley to Train to Run for Office

Largest Class in Organization’s History

Reception for 2016 Class in San Francisco on Saturday Night, Dec 5th

City College of SF Board Vice President Thea Selby to Speak

San Francisco, CA – Forty-nine women were chosen for Emerge California’s Class of 2016 following a rigorous selection process. Over the next four months, they will participate in Emerge CA’s intensive training program for Democratic women who want to run for office.

This is the organization’s largest class to date. The women come from over 30 cities and 12 counties across the state. They range in age from 21 to 63 and represent a wide range of professions including technology, healthcare, education and public service. Seventy-three percent are women of color.

Emerge CA will celebrate this exemplary class at a fundraiser reception in San Francisco at Temple SF this Saturday, December 5 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. Thea Selby, an Emerge CA alumna and Vice President of City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees, will address a crowd of over 200 that will include elected officials, Emerge CA board members, alumnae and supporters.

“We are excited to welcome this impressive class of talented, diverse women,” said Emerge California Executive Director Kimberly Ellis. “The latest data shows that white men make up 53% of candidates and 55% of office holders in our state, even though they are only 19% of the population. Not only does this not make a representative government, but we are also missing out on the skills and talents of more than half our population. All of the women in this year’s class are well equipped to make a difference in our state.”
