Emerge CA To Host Celebrating Black History Month Reception in San Diego, Featuring Assemblymember Shirley Weber

San Diego, CA – Emerge California launched operations in Southern California last year and is hosting its first reception this Saturday in San Diego. The organization, which recruits and trains Democratic women to run for office, will be holding a training and reception this weekend.

The reception will celebrate Black History Month with Keynote Speaker Assemblymember Shirley Weber at The Prado at Balboa Park.

“We are thrilled to be holding our first training and reception in San Diego,” said Lindsay Bubar, Southern California Program Director. “It gives us the opportunity to introduce the Emerge program and its mission, which is to build a pipeline of women candidates, to San Diego. Women are currently outnumbered by men three to one in city, county and state government. It is critical that we elect more women, not just for parity sake, but to create a more equitable society that works for all of us.”

Women continue to be drastically underrepresented in California politics, and Emerge CA is working to change that. Women make up over 50% of the state’s population but only 27% of elected officials are women. Since its founding in Northern California fourteen years ago, Emerge CA has recruited and trained over 300 women. Of those who have run, nearly 70% have won their races.

There are 20 women in this year’s 2016 Southern California class, including two from San Diego County (Class of 2016 bios: http://www.emergeca.org/alumnae?year=2016).
